Clans and Tribes of Meer

Clans or Tribes of Meer

Most if not all of the people of Meer, connect themselves to a clan or noble house. There are quite a vast amount of clans throughout the Kingdom and so it would take me quite some time to give over all of the details. The relationship between clans and their members is still strong, maybe not as it used to be now that there is a legal system and a royal house. Subjects do not have to be loyal to any clan and are under no obligation to act or fight on behalf of a clan, they are however legally required to fight under the banner of their House and this largely depends on where they live. Many of the ancient clans were nomadic and some still to this day are, and travel the length and breadth of Meer during their lifetime. Most clans however are not nomadic and have made lives for themselves, gaining and using land under varying house banners. Noble Houses akin themselves to their own Clans, which are their given name.

There are a few dozen clans that still wield a great deal of influence and power over certain territorial areas and people that live within that area. It would be correct in thinking that they have kept their power through allegiance to certain Houses and Kings. Under a peace treaty, created by the previous High King, Baed, Clans do not have to fight under any House Banner unless they freely wish too. However this treaty is blurred, as under the common law, it states that if you live upon the territory of specific House, you are bound by law to serve that House in war, if they agree. Subjects do reserve the right to ask for exception, but this is rarely given. A subject does have the right to go to the High Council of Masters to have their cases assessed, but even if they were to succeed, they would be exiled from their homeland and so this rarely happens.
Tribes within Meer are not bound by land or blood, but by religion, ethnicity or magic. In Meer they are mainly made up of those possessed of magic. A few remain, often found upon the cusps of forests or landmarks that bare a significant importance to their beliefs.

Important to Note

Not all of the clans will pledge their allegiance to their King and they have the right to fight for another if they choose. There Lord or protector can try to stop them from serving under another, but the great clans are made up of great scores of soldiers and so it would be prudent. Most clans are incredibly loyal to their King and Lord however and so it is only ever a few that rebel.
