Noble Houses of Meer
Noble Houses of Meer
The Noble houses of Meer have
been in existence since 681AF under the rule of the High King Baran. Under
Baran’s rule, he gave the ruling clans, political entity within the royal
courts and high royal court. By doing this, warring clans had to sign peace
treaties and territorial treaties in return for legal land and a place within
the regional and national royal courts. This did not bring about instant peace
and the process of change was slow, it did however bring about a form of stability
and unity. Despite the often turbulent history of Meer, stained with corrupt
Kings and autocratic systems of rule, Baran and his son, Baldon, initiated the
Book of Law, a system of common law, made up of historical laws used within the
ruling clans and new laws, bringing into state a new ruling system, giving the
High King centralised power. Over the last thousand years, this legal system
had changed and now instead of the High King having all power over his or her’s
subjects, the legal system has been changed in order to represent the rights of
the subjects. The High King still possesses greater authority and power, but
his power can be challenged by the high masters who act as representatives of
the Kingdom, under the legal system.
In spite of their ever changing
system of power, the Kingdom of Meer lacks in comparison to the southern
Kingdoms of Taer, Calnuthe and Ruarr. The noble houses still very much attached
to their historical clan routes, still have great authority over their clan
members and subjects and instead of using the legal system as a means to
protect their subjects, they use it in which to manipulate their own interests.
Masters of law are usually from the wealthy noble houses and therefore are
greatly influence by their own interests and the interests of their house.
During the reign of Baed in ninth century was the bloodiest since the second
century, until the bloody rule of Mor the Black. The Royal House of Meer has
been in constant conflict with the House of Gaul, the High City of the western
Kingdom of Gaul and the House of Dulthe, the High City of the eastern kingdom
of Dulthe. Over the course of Meer history, both houses have fought for a claim
upon the throne, each claiming their bloodline to be linked to that of the
House Meer by marriage. Before the year of
681m (King Baran of Fiar), the three Kingdoms were ruled by different Kings.
King Gudbran won the battle and took Alfir’s crown, claiming Galgor as part of
his Kingdom. Sixty nine years later, King Gudbran died and his son Gudorr
became King of Galgor and Dulthe. In 639 AF, King Baron of Fiar, true heir of
Meer and ancestor of Gabrenne, made a treaty with the House of Dulthe, but
which he would marry their daughter, binding both houses as one. In return
those loyal to the House of Dulthe took up arms and stood side by side with
Baran and defeated Galgor. Baron was named High King of the three Kingdoms and
was married to Meda of House Dulthe. During his reign, in an act to bring peace
to the three Kingdoms, he married his eldest son, Baldon to Fera of Gaul and
brought peace to Meer.
However not all those within the
High Borne noble houses have been accepting of their King or forgiving towards
the Royal House and so tensions and strains still run deep and strong among the
ardent few, who wish to see themselves and their houses once more upon the
throne.
